Free GIF Compressor
A GIF compressor reduces a GIF's file size while keeping it animated. The three levers are resolution (scale), color count (palette size) and frame count (skipping) — this tool exposes all three and re-encodes the GIF locally in your browser.
Quick answer: Compress a GIF by lowering its scale (e.g. 75%), reducing colors (e.g. 128) and optionally skipping frames — this tool applies all three and re-encodes the GIF in your browser, with no upload.
| Levers | Scale · colors · frame skip |
|---|---|
| Upload | None — 100% in-browser |
| Speed preserved | Yes (unless you change it) |
| Cost | Free, no sign-up |
Your GIF is processed entirely in this browser — it is never uploaded.
What is this tool for?
- Getting under a chat app's upload limit (Discord, WhatsApp, Slack)
- Speeding up page load by slimming heavy animated banners
- Fitting GIFs into email attachments
- Reducing storage for archives of animated clips
How the three levers work
Scale reduces pixel dimensions — the biggest single saving. Colors shrinks the palette from 256 to as low as 16, which flattens gradients but barely affects flat-color art. Frame skip drops every Nth frame, which shortens the animation but quarters size at 4 when motion is slow.
Recommended starting points
Flat-color graphics: 100% scale, 128 colors, no skip. Screen recordings: 75% scale, 64 colors, skip 2. Camera footage: 50% scale, 32 colors, skip 2 — or accept blur and convert to video.
