Discord's limits at a glance
- Default upload cap: 10 MB for free users (may vary per server boost level)
- Nitro raises the cap but recipients still download faster when files are small
- Animated avatars: 512×512 or smaller, a few MB
Settings that work
Chat GIFs look fine at 75% scale and 128 colors. Screen recordings tolerate 50% scale, 64 colors and skipping every 2nd frame — text stays readable if the source is 1080p or larger. Making a sticker instead? Stickers are a different limit — 320×320 px, 512 KB, APNG only. Use the dedicated Discord sticker resizer.
If it still does not fit
Cut the clip shorter before compressing — length multiplies size faster than any other lever. Then 50% scale + 32 colors will absorb almost anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Discord convert GIFs automatically?
No — oversized uploads are rejected, not resized. Compress before uploading.
Why is my 9 MB GIF slow to send?
Upload speed, not the limit. A 3–4 MB GIF sends in a third of the time and looks nearly identical in chat.
